Benefits of glasses- help improve vision
- no risk of infection of the eye - can be fashionable - easy to put on/take off - easy to maintain - long-lasting - can be economical |
Limitations of glasses- distance between eye and glasses can create distortion
- poor peripheral vision - can hurt nose and ears - falls off easily - can break at any time - lens can get scratched - bad for sports - fogs up with temperature change - annoying to wear in rain/snow - can add to the "nerd/geek" stereotype |
Benefits of Contact lens- can improve vision

Limitations OF CONTACT LENS- can easily cause infection
- must be cautious in usage - expensive - cannot be slept in - can cause irritability - hard to find if lost |
Social factor: Bullying
Research has shown that the self-esteem of children is actually affected by wearing glasses. In popular culture, there is a general assumption that people who wear glasses are nerd or geeks. These two labels are both looked down with children, and children, who often do not know any better believe that it is not good to be a nerd or a geek. When a child with glasses is bullied for being a nerd or a geek, they become less confident of themselves, and their self-esteem diminishes. A study has shown that child glass-wearers are often more self-conscious about their appearance, athletic abilities, and what their friends or peers think about them. "On average, contact lens wearers reported better perceptions about their own appearance than did kids wearing eyeglasses (News Medical)".
